I have visited West Sumatra on 3 occasions, including last year where I attended the Minangkabau festival and I think its a very special place, so I have decided to return this year and take a group of keen adventurers and explorers.

Why is this area so unique and interesting ?
Home to around 4 million Minang people, they are the largest Matrilineal society in the world.
The Minang people are some of the warmest and friendliest people in Indonesia and are very proud of their unique culture, and the area gets very few visits from foreign tourists.
The Minangkabau have fascinated anthropologists on account of their unusual combination of matrilineal family system with a strong Islamic connection. Every Minang belongs to his/her mothers descent group, and family houses as well as the paddy fields are the property of women.
Each day will be full of interesting adventures and a ton of diversity as we experience beautiful Lake Maninjau, Bukkitingi surrounded by Volcanos and green, lush valleys. We will visit the local market, and connect with the friendly, local Minang people. Then if we are lucky we may see the Rafflesia flower in bloom ( we saw this in 2024 ) in a beautiful nearby forest where we will have a short hike. Then south to the Minangkabau festival and visit traditional villages in the area.
We will have a few days in this area including attending the Cow racing and meeting hundreds of Minang people dressed in their beautiful traditional colouful handcrafted clothing. Then back to Padang for the night with many great memories and connections with some of the most friendly people in Indonesia.
