Japan: Culture Framed by Autumn

Dave and Suki are teaming up again, this time to one of the most photogenic countries on the planet – Japan.

It will be a fun filled 13 days featuring spending time with the only indigenous culture in Japan , the Ainu , attending a colourful Matsuri cultural festival

and delighting in the stunning beauty of Kyoto in the fall.

In between their will be plenty of Onsens ( natural hot springs ), great food, a bit of Sake, many interesting photography subjects, teaching and review sessions with Suki, an insight into Japanese culture and history from local guides and Dave who has been to Japan 6 times including 2 visits to Hokkaido.

This cultural photography journey is designed for photographers who want depth rather than postcard imagery. Timed for peak autumn colour and significant cultural events, the journey focuses on people place and tradition through ethical access and intentional storytelling. The route moves from Japans Indigenous north to the ceremonial south and concludes in Kyoto during the height of autumn foliage.

HOKKAIDO AINU CULTURE

The journey begins in Hokkaido home to the Ainu Japans Indigenous people. Photography here is approached as cultural understanding rather than observation. We begin with historical and cultural context before entering community spaces. From Sapporo we travel to the Lake Akan region an area of forests volcanic landscapes and Ainu communities. Three days are spent slowly and respectfully with local hosts.Photography focuses on environmental portraits daily life cultural detail ritual spaces and the relationship between people and land. Autumn light in Hokkaido is soft and directional supporting intimate documentary work.

YATSUSHIRO MATSURI KYUSHU

We travel south to Kyushu for the Yatsushiro Myoken Festival a UNESCO recognised cultural event. This festival combines Shinto ritual folklore and community celebration. Photography centres on floats costumes lanterns night processions and the interaction between performers and spectators. This section emphasises working in crowds low light conditions fast movement and visual storytelling that balances spectacle with quiet human moments.

KYOTO AUTUMN ELEGANCE

The journey concludes with four full days in Kyoto Japans cultural heart during peak autumn colour. Photography includes temples framed by maple leaves early morning shoots in bamboo groves traditional neighbourhoods shrines and seasonal details. Kyoto provides space to slow down refine composition and bring together a cohesive body of work.
